Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Friday raised a question over the intention of the Congress ahead of the Assembly elections in Haryana as wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia joined the party.
Speaking in Rohtak, CM Saini said, "Every person has their own opinion about which ideology they want to associate with. Congress should clarify its intention behind this."
While Prime Minister Narendra Modi has always taken decisions in the national interest, Congress has always opposed them. So, Congress needs to explain their intention at all. All the more so since they play politics involving players, jawans, and kisans, CM Saini said while speaking to reporters in Rohtak.
Wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat joined the Congress in the presence of Congress General Secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal, party leader Pawan Khera, Haryana Congress Chief Udai Bhan and AICC incharge of Haryana, Deepak Babaria earlier on Friday.
Hours after their joining, Congress appointed Punia as the working chairman of All India Kisan Congress and fielded Phogat as candidate from Julana Assembly constituency.
Earlier today, the wrestlers quit as railway officials in Northern Railways.
The two star wrestlers joined Congress nearly a month ahead of the Assembly polls in Haryana.
Election to the 90-member Haryana Assembly will be held on October 5 and votes will be counted on October 8.
While Punia was the bronze winner at the Tokyo Olympics, Vinesh Phogat was the first woman wrestler from India to enter the Olympic final.
