Former wrestler Vinesh Phogat sent in her resignation from Northern Railways on Friday, where she was serving as the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) Sports in level 7.
"Serving Indian Railways has been one of those memorable and proud times of my life. At this juncture of my life, I have decided to separate myself from the railway service and have submitted my resignation to the competent authorities of the Indian Railways.
"I will always remain indebted to the Indian Railway family for this opportunity given to me by the Railways in the service of the nation," Vinesh wrote on X.
Vinesh is likely to join the Indian National Congress on Friday. She is expected to contest the forthcoming Haryana Assembly elections.
On Wednesday, Vinesh, along with Bajrang Punia, called on the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. A day after the CEC met to seal the list of candidates for the October 5 elections, the meeting between Rahul and Vinesh has become a key development.
Accordingly, it is learnt that Congress might give Charkhi Dadri or Julana seat to Vinesh.
The ace wrestler missed the gold medal in the women's freestyle 50kg category in the Paris Olympics for being overweight by 100 grams that led to her ouster from the final. Following the disappointment, Vinesh announced through social media that she was retiring from wrestling.
