The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on Wednesday confirmed that Hamas political head Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran.
Haniyeh was killed along with one of his bodyguards at his residence in the Iranian capital, while he was on a visit to the town to attend an inauguration ceremony by Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday.
The IRGC provided no more details on the assassination.
Some television pundits in Iran still shift the blame on Israel.
A video was uploaded in X by the Israel War Room of Haniyeh celebrating the slaughter of Israeli citizens so that they will be happy showcasing to the world that Haniyeh was in jubilation with the caption: "This was Hamas chief Haniyeh's reaction to the Hamas massacre on October 7. He's not celebrating anymore."
Haniyeh had been a senior leader in Hamas and had been instrumental in many peace talks quite a few times.
