According to reports from news agency PTI, Birender Singh, a former Union minister, announced his departure from the BJP and his return to the Congress. This move follows closely on the heels of his son, Brijendra Singh, resigning from the Lok Sabha and the BJP to join the Congress about a month ago.
In a press conference, Birender Singh stated, "I have tendered my resignation from the primary membership of the BJP and forwarded it to party chief J P Nadda. Additionally, my wife Prem Lata, who served as an MLA from 2014 to 2019, has also parted ways with the party. Tomorrow, we will officially join the Congress."
Birender Singh had initially joined the BJP in 2014, under the leadership of then-party president Amit Shah, after ending his association of almost four decades with the Congress.
The sequence of defections began earlier this year when Brijendra Singh resigned as a Member of Parliament and switched to the Congress, citing "compelling political reasons." This decision came nearly five months after Birender Singh issued an ultimatum to the BJP during a rally in Jind in October 2023.
During the rally, Singh had expressed his intention to leave the BJP if it continued its alliance with the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), led by Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala, in Haryana. Interestingly, just two days after Birender Singh's son joined the Congress, the BJP terminated its alliance with the JJP on March 12.
