'Emergency' shouldn't be released without SGPC's approval, says Cong MP

Channi, while stating that the SGPC is the representative body of Sikhs, has to first scrutinize and approve the featuring of the history of Sikhs in the movie.

Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi on Sunday said the Kangana Ranaut-starrer Emergency should not be released without permission from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee.

Channi, while stating that the SGPC is the representative body of Sikhs, has to first scrutinize and approve the featuring of the history of Sikhs in the movie.

"Kangana Ranaut's film should depict the history of Sikhs in the right perspective and for that, the last word should be from the SGPC. Without their permission, the film will neither be released nor allowed to be released," said Channi.

The remarks by the Congress MP come amid protests galore in Punjab against Kangana Ranaut for her past diatribe against the farmers and the hue and cry over her film Emergency, based on the life of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Talking to IANS about the film getting released on September 6, Kangana said, "Hopefully. My film got cleared by censor," adding that it has to be seen "if results turn out to be negative I am determined to fight for it. I am determined to even go to court to protect my film. To save my rights as an individual. You can't change history and scare us by threats," she said.

Channi also commented on the statements by former MP Simranjit Singh Mann, who had controversially attacked Bollywood actress over her remarks on farmers' protest.

He suggested Mann was angry and that he should not have done that: "Kangana should not be taken too seriously, and Simranjit Singh Mann should not have made unnecessary comments driven out of anger."

While protests against Kangana are going on from every front, Channi tried to remind her that Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh have always been united and "this bonding has never been broken and will not be allowed to break."

He warned that any force trying to disrupt this unity will be opposed tooth and nail.

He said this while recalling the history of Punjab after independence, and how Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians have been living with love and harmony among themselves in the region, and wished this would continue in times to come.
