The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has postponed its legislative party meeting, initially scheduled for Monday, to two days later. The new meeting date is now February 19, after which the swearing-in ceremony on February 20 will take place.
Initially, the meeting was scheduled for 3 p.m. on Monday, during which the BJP was expected to finalize the name of Delhi’s new Chief Minister. However, sources have confirmed that this meeting will now take place on February 19.
There was speculation that the swearing-in of the new Chief Minister might also occur on February 19, but this has now been delayed to the following day.
Sources indicated that two national general secretaries of the BJP, Vinod Tawde and Tarun Chugh, will preside over the swearing-in ceremony on February 20.
Besides, all 48 newly elected BJP MLAs will meet to choose the leader of the BJP Legislative Party, in the presence of the party's central observers. The chosen leader will then be sworn in as the next Chief Minister of Delhi.
In order to conclude the name of the Chief Minister post, the BJP is likely to appoint central observers in the coming days, who will hold a meeting with the MLAs and declare the new CM.
Various senior BJP leaders are currently contesting for the post, namely Pravesh Verma, MLA from New Delhi, Delhi BJP ex-President Vijender Gupta, Rekha Gupta, and Satish Upadhyay.
With 48 out of the total 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly polls, the BJP has managed to dislodge Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) from office. AAP managed only 22 seats in the February 5 election, while Congress, as in the last election, missed out on any seats.
In a shocking twist, some of AAP's top leadership, such as former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, lost the election, while Caretaker CM Atishi was able to hold on to her seat.
