The Congress attacked the BJP governments on Saturday, referring to what it called "bulldozer justice" against families of accused involved in crimes.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge took to X, saying, "The ruling party just bulldozes Constitution and targets minorities in BJP-ruled states.".
"Demolishing someone's home and rendering their family homeless is inhuman and unjust. The targeting of minorities repeatedly in BJP-ruled states is deeply concerning. Such acts have no place in a society governed by the Rule of Law," Kharge wrote, labelling the BJP's approach as "anarchy."
He turned around and said, "The Congress Party vehemently denounces such violation of the Constitution by the BJP state governments who have chosen bulldozing as an unconcealed tactic to instill fear in the hearts of citizens. Offences must be adjudicated in courts and not by way of state-sponsored coercion. Anarchy cannot replace natural justice.".
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra jumped into the fray and criticized the BJP for punishing families of accused persons even before any judicial proceedings commenced.
"If someone is accused of a crime, then only the court can decide his crime and his punishment. But punishing the accused's family as soon as accusation is made, taking away the roof from over their heads, disobeying the court—this is not justice," Priyanka wrote on X.
She termed the BJP's actions "the height of barbarism and injustice," stressing that "there should be a difference between the lawmakers, the lawkeepers, and the lawbreakers."
She said, "Governments cannot act like criminals. Obeying the law, the Constitution, democracy, and humanity is the least condition of governance in a civilized society. Who cannot do his or her duty properly can neither do any good to society nor to the country as a whole. Bulldozer justice is totally unacceptable; it must stop."
The objection of Congress top leaders to 'bulldozer justice' has come in the backdrop of an objectionable statement given by Hindu seer Mahant Ramgiri Maharaj and subsequent protests by the Muslim community in Nashik of Maharashtra that turned violent and left policemen injured, several vehicles damaged.
According to reports, a house belonging to one of the accused, Shahzad Ali, was demolished, and nearly 50 people were booked for violence following a demonstration that led to violence.
