Om Birla, the BJP MP from Kota-Bundi, was on Wednesday re-elected as Lok Sabha Speaker for the second consecutive time, by voice votes.
With this victory, Birla has become the first BJP leader to hold this prestigious position for the second consecutive term.
The election results were declared by the House's Protem Speaker, Bhartruhari Mahtab, who confirmed Birla's selection via voice vote.
After Birla took his place as Speaker, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi escorted him to the chair and offered their congratulations.
Prior to the election, Prime Minister Modi, Union Minister Amit Shah, and other NDA leaders had endorsed Om Birla for the role.
In contrast, the Opposition, led by Shiv Sena (UBT) member Arvind Sawant, put forth K. Suresh as their nominee for Speaker.
Birla had been announced as the NDA candidate for the Speaker's post on Tuesday. It was left to Union Minister Rajnath Singh and other leaders to reach out to opposition party leaders.
After initially indicating that the Opposition would support the NDA candidate, the Opposition sprang a surprise by fielding Congress MP K. Suresh as its nominee at the eleventh hour.
In his earlier stint as Speaker in Modi 2.0 government, Om Birla had taken several significant decisions.
