Kota MP Om Birla filed his nomination for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker as the consensus candidate of the NDA for the parliamentary post he held in the previous House. JD(U) leader and Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh told mediapersons that the nomination of Birla was endorsed unanimously by all NDA partners. A courtesy call for support to the opposition was made by senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh.
Lalan Singh countered opposition by mentioning that while Rajnath Singh sought to decide upon a discussion in this regard at an appropriate time, they themselves wanted a decision on the deputy speaker post instantly. Cabinet Minister Piyush Goyal mirrored the sentiment in saying it was better to have had a consensus candidate and condemned the opposition for laying conditions. He clarified that democracy couldn't function in this manner.
The opposition INDIA bloc has fielded Congress leader K Suresh for the speaker's post.
