'Khela Hobey Divas' now 'Ayushman Divas': BJP's Tit-for-Tat Response to Didi

The TMC government had designated August 16 as Khela Hobey Divas in 2021 after its Assembly election victory. Officially, the occasion was presented as a sports promotion initiative featuring football tournaments and the distribution of sporting equipment to encourage youth participation. The event, however, also carried political significance, as "Khela Hobey" had been the rallying slogan of Mamata Banerjee's election campaign.

The newly formed West Bengal government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has discontinued the August 16 observance of "Khela Hobey Divas," introduced by the previous Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) administration, and announced that the day will now be marked as "Ayushman Divas" in a move that signals a fresh political confrontation.

Speaking on Sunday, Adhikari said August 16 would henceforth be observed as Ayushman Divas to commemorate the Centre's flagship Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme. The date also marks the completion of the BJP government's first 100 days in office.

Announcing the decision, the Chief Minister said the date should be remembered for its historical significance rather than political celebrations.

"August 16 is a black day in Kolkata's history since the 'Great Calcutta killings' were orchestrated under the leadership of Suhrawardy from this date. The previous TMC government observed it as 'Khela Hobey Divas'.Our government has decided that the day will be observed as Ayushman Divas. The details of our programme will soon follow," he told news agency PTI after a BJP organisational meeting in Tamluk.

Adhikari was referring to Direct Action Day on August 16, 1946, when the All India Muslim League launched mass protests in support of its demand for Pakistan before India's Independence. The demonstrations later descended into one of the deadliest episodes of communal violence in British India, known as the Great Calcutta Killings.

The violence continued for several days, claiming an estimated 4,000 lives, injuring more than 10,000 people and displacing tens of thousands. Historians have widely described the riots as one of the defining developments that hastened the Partition of India in 1947. Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, the then Chief Minister of undivided Bengal, has remained a central figure in debates over the administration's handling of the violence.

Adhikari said further details of the Ayushman Divas programme would be announced on August 16.

He also set out the government's roadmap for expanding health insurance coverage in the state.

"Citizens who have crossed the age of 70 are automatically entitled to get the benefits of the scheme. And the remaining, who are eligible to receive the benefits of the scheme, will also be included in it. That will cover about 70 per cent of the beneficiaries. The remaining 30 per cent will be brought under the CM Health Insurance scheme, both of which will be introduced together," he said.

Addressing concerns over the implementation of the Annapurna Yojna, which replaced the TMC government's Lakshmir Bhandar cash assistance scheme, Adhikari said financial assistance would be restricted to eligible beneficiaries.

"Money under Annapurna scheme has been transferred to over 1.2 crore women, which translates to an average 35,000 to 40,000 beneficiaries in each constituency. The verification process will continue till August 30 and all those who are found eligible will be included and those who are non-deserving will be dropped," he said.
