WATCH | Setback to Navjot Sidhu, Congress indirectly projects Charanjit Singh Channi as CM face in Punjab

The INC video doing rounds on social media shows actor-philanthropist Sonu Sood talking about his idea of a Chief Minister. He explains that any individual becoming the Chief Minister mustn’t struggle to the position rather he must be approached by the party to become one. Any individual who demands the CM candidacy or says he deserves to be the candidate is not “the real Chief Minister.”

In what is being seen as a setback to  Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu's chief ministerial ambitions, the Congress party has put out a video on social media that indirectly projects sitting Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi as the CM candidate for the upcoming state Assembly elections. The Congress has not officially announced chief ministerial candidates for any of the states that are going to the polls.

The INC video doing rounds on social media shows actor-philanthropist Sonu Sood talking about his idea of a Chief Minister. He explains that any individual becoming the Chief Minister mustn’t struggle to the position rather he must be approached by the party to become one. Any individual who demands the CM candidacy or says he deserves to be the candidate is not “the real Chief Minister.” The actual CM should be a “back-bencher who should be brought to the forefront and told that he will be the CM. Only such a person can bring about change,” Sonu Sood says in the video.

The video comes on the back of favourable comments made by sitting party MLAs on Channi’s performance as a C.M. in a short span of three months. Cabinet Minister Rana Gurjit Singh said that any doubts around Channi’s stint as a C.M. is bound to be counterproductive given that he has done a “great job” and this issue must not involve any further debate or discussion. Another MLA, Hardev Singh Laddi Sherowalia commented that popularity of Channi is making his rivals nervous and which is why there is a “sustained campaign” to oust him from C.M. post.

Recently, on the request of C.M. Channi, the Election Commission delayed the state elections to February 20 in the wake of the third wave of COVID19.  Aam Aadmi Party on Tuesday announced that sitting MP from Sangrur constituency, Bhagwant Mann, will be the party’s C.M. candidate. BJP is yet to seal seat-sharing formula with Amarinder Singh’s Punjab Lok Congress and Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa’s Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt).
