The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the enforcement of controversial orders from the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments mandating all restaurants and dhabas along the Kanwar Yatra route to display owner and worker names.

The Bench, led by Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti, said while issuing notice on petitions challenging these directives, "Devotees should get food of their choice provided it meets hygiene standards.".

The state governments have ordered that all food outlets, eateries, and food joints in the states will have to display a "nameplate" mentioning the names of the owners/proprietors and the staff members.

The order said that this will help ensure that during Shravan month, the "purity of faith" is sustained for the Hindu devotees attending the Kanwar Yatra.

Moreover, selling anything with Halal certification along the route of Yatra will also attract penal action, the order stated.
