Situation in Rajouri-Poonch matter of concern; Army enhancing deployment, says Gen Pande

During a press conference, Gen Pande conveyed a clear message to soldiers and commanders about adopting a "zero tolerance" approach towards human rights violations, emphasizing the need for professional conduct.

The current situation in the Rajouri-Poonch region of Jammu and Kashmir is a cause for concern, according to Chief of Army Staff Gen Manoj Pande. To address the escalating terrorist activities in the area, the military is implementing a series of measures, including increased troop deployment, strengthening the intelligence apparatus, and engaging with the local population.

During a press conference, Gen Pande conveyed a clear message to soldiers and commanders about adopting a "zero tolerance" approach towards human rights violations, emphasizing the need for professional conduct. The Army's focus is on countering well-trained terrorists operating in the Rajouri-Poonch area who are adept at carrying out attacks and ambushes.

While not explicitly naming Pakistan, Gen Pande pointed out the ongoing support for "terror infrastructure." The Army Chief pledged to continue counter-terrorism operations in the region relentlessly to restore normalcy.

Gen Pande highlighted the importance of drawing tactical lessons from the adversary's modus operandi and strengthening human intelligence. This involves collaboration with other agencies and garnering support from the local community, deemed crucial in anti-terror operations.

The Army is also actively working on enhancing its technological capabilities for intelligence gathering, coupled with increased deployment and strategic reorientation of units. Simultaneously, troops have been instructed to operate professionally, adhering to strict guidelines that emphasize respect for human rights.

Gen Pande acknowledged the rise in terrorist activities in the Rajouri-Poonch region over the past few months, attributing it to increased encouragement and support from across the border. Despite a significant drop in violence levels in Jammu and Kashmir's hinterland in 2023, the Rajouri-Poonch area has witnessed heightened terrorist activities.

In response to the tragic incident where three civilians were allegedly killed during Army questioning, Gen Pande stated that the affected village has been adopted by the Army, with engagements initiated with the local community.

While the ceasefire understanding with the Pakistan military along the Line of Control is holding, Gen Pande mentioned continuous attempts of infiltration, successfully thwarted by a robust counter-infiltration grid. Additionally, there are ongoing efforts to smuggle narcotics and war-like stores through drones along the international border, countered by an effective anti-drone system.
