The position of NSG DG became available following the transfer of the previous DG, Nalin Prabhat, who was appointed Chief of the Jammu and Kashmir Police earlier this year. Prabhat, who was initially set to lead the NSG until August 31, 2028, had his tenure shortened by the Centre on August 15. The NSG, often referred to as the "black cats," was established in 1984.

Prabhat will succeed R.R. Swain as the Chief of Jammu and Kashmir Police on September 30. Until then, Anish Dayal Singh, the Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), has been managing the NSG's responsibilities in an acting capacity.
