Central Bureau of Investigation officials have made big leads investigating the recent rape and murder of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, related to instructions over attempts to renovate the place near the crime scene, sources said.
In the dead of night on August 13, barely hours after the division bench of the Calcutta High Court ordered the CBI to take over the probe from Kolkata Police, state PWD staff tried to undertake renovation work in a room adjacent to the seminar hall where the victim's body was found on the morning of August 9.
These renovation plans were promptly shelved as protests by the student community of the hospital reached a fever pitch.
According to investigators, such a vital document has been found that shows the renovation orders were passed on August 10, a day after the body of the victim was found. As per sources, the order was given by a former senior doctor at the hospital who had also been holding an administrative post in the hospital and was transferred after the tragic incident. This doctor reportedly is a close associate of the former and controversial Principal of R.G. Kar College, Sandip Ghosh.
CBI officials are trying to ascertain whether the renovation order was given independently by the senior doctor or at someone's behest.
Further, the agency is trying to trace the circumstances leading to hurried cremation of the victim's body, instead of preserving it in the hospital morgue for a possible second post-mortem.
On Thursday afternoon, a CBI team went to the hospital and questioned the staff and officials responsible for the arrangements that led to the fast-track cremation. At the same time, Sandip Ghosh is being questioned about his decision not to preserve the body in the morgue to facilitate a second post-mortem if it was asked for by the victim's family.
