Prolonged Period of Dense Fog and Cold Wave Forecasted by IMD for the Next 5 Days

In its daily bulletin, the IMD disclosed that minimum temperatures ranging from 2-5 degrees Celsius are expected over most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi. Additionally, temperatures in the range of 6-10 degrees Celsius are anticipated over many regions of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, north Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) cautioned on Tuesday that North India is set to experience persistent dense to very dense fog and cold wave conditions over the next five days, offering little respite. The weather forecast agency highlighted the likelihood of cold wave to severe cold wave conditions persisting across the plains of Northwest India during this period.

In its daily bulletin, the IMD disclosed that minimum temperatures ranging from 2-5 degrees Celsius are expected over most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi. Additionally, temperatures in the range of 6-10 degrees Celsius are anticipated over many regions of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, north Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand. These temperatures are notably 1 to 4 degrees Celsius below normal across many parts of Northwest and adjoining east India, according to the IMD.

The agency pointed out that 'jet stream winds' with speeds of 140-150 knots are prevailing over the plains of North India, potentially causing light rainfall or snowfall at isolated locations in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on Wednesday.

Dense to very dense fog conditions are expected to persist during night and morning hours over many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi until Thursday night/morning, and in some areas from Friday to Sunday morning, as per the IMD.

Moreover, the IMD forecasted similar foggy conditions in parts of Uttar Pradesh from Tuesday to Thursday morning, with isolated pockets experiencing dense fog for the following three days. Uttarakhand and north Madhya Pradesh are also anticipated to witness dense to very dense fog during morning hours on Wednesday and Thursday.

The IMD warned of ongoing cold wave to severe cold wave conditions in many parts of Punjab on Tuesday and Wednesday, extending to some areas on Thursday and Saturday. Similar conditions are expected in parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi during Tuesday and Saturday. Additionally, isolated pockets in north Rajasthan may experience cold wave conditions from Tuesday to Thursday, and West Uttar Pradesh is likely to witness cold wave conditions on Tuesday.

The IMD also highlighted the probability of ground frost conditions in Uttarakhand on Tuesday and Wednesday.
