The late socialist leader and former Chief Minister of Bihar, Karpoori Thakur, will be posthumously conferred with India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna. Known for his significant contributions to uplifting the backward classes in Bihar, Thakur played a pioneering role in implementing reservations for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) based on the recommendations of the Mungeri Lal Commission during his tenure as Bihar Chief Minister from 1977 to 1979. The announcement from Rashtrapati Bhavan states, "The President has been pleased to award Bharat Ratna to Shri Karpoori Thakur (posthumously)." This recognition is a tribute to his lasting impact on social and political reforms in India.
