India-Pakistan tensions have heightened after the horrific Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, in which 26 innocent civilians, 25 tourists, and a local resident were brutally murdered by Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists, who were allegedly supported and sponsored by Pakistan. The attack has outraged India, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged that the perpetrators, including the terrorists and their handlers, would be pursued relentlessly.

As a retaliatory measure for the attack, India took a number of measures, among them deporting Pakistanis, shutting down the Attari-Wagah border crossing, suspending the Indus Water Treaty, closing Pakistani commercial flights' routes through Indian airspace, and stopping all trade and cultural relations with Pakistan.

As part of national security readiness, the Union Home Ministry ordered all border states on Monday to hold mock civil defense exercises on Wednesday, so that students and citizens become familiar with emergency procedures in the event of wartime conditions.

Prime Minister Modi has given operational autonomy to the Indian Armed Forces to retaliate against the Pahalgam massacre. This was after a series of top-level meetings between the Prime Minister, Defence Minister, National Security Advisor, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), and the chiefs of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. Secondly, Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha has done several security reviews and asked the Army to do whatever it takes to arrest the killers of the Pahalgam attack.

As part of the strong message they sought to give to terrorists and sympathizers of terror, security forces have bulldozed homes belonging to ten terrorists linked with the Pahalgam attacks. Two homes owned by Adil Hussain Thokar and Asif Sheikh, who were members of the LeT, were bulldozed in Tral and Bijbehara areas on April 25.

On April 28, the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly censured in one voice the ghastly terrorist attack and passed a resolution condemning the act.
