Supreme Court gets five new judges
With this, the number of the apex court judges rose to 32 as against the sanctioned strength of 34 judges. The oath-taking ceremony was attended by Supreme Court judges, lawyers, and family members of the new judges. Amid the long-drawn tussle between the Centre and the judiciary over the appointment of judges, the Centre on Saturday cleared the names of five judges.

Attorney General (AG) R. Venkataramani said that the new appointments will be cleared very soon.The bench comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Abhay S. Oka asked the AG, representing the Centre, five names were sent in December for appointment.

In response to questions in the Rajya Sabha, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday clarified that the government has not requested the Supreme Court to include a government nominee in the collegium. In a communication sent to the Supreme Court on January 6, the government also emphasized the importance of finalizing the memorandum of procedure (MoP) to guide the appointment, transfer, and elevation of Supreme Court and high court judges.
World Bank can't interpret Indus Water Treaty for India, Pakistan: MEA
India's External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, on Thursday said that the World Bank is not in a position to interpret the treaty between India and Pakistan, the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) and that there is a provision of a graded approach in the treaty. "I do not think they (World Bank) are in a position to interpret the treaty for us. It is a treaty between our two countries and our assessment of the treaty is that there is a provision of graded approach," he said.
SC to hear plea against ban on BBC documentary on Gujarat riots on Friday
According to the cause list uploaded on the apex court website, a bench comprising justices Sanjiv Khanna and M.M. Sundresh will take up a petition filed by senior journalist N. Ram, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, and advocate Prashant Bhushan, and also another petition moved by advocate M.L. Sharma. The documentary series, titled 'India: The Modi Question', has been dismissed as a biased "propaganda piece" by the government.
