'Chillai Kalan' begins in Kashmir & Ladakh
Over this one month's time, night temperatures were expected to drop several notches below the freezing point while the maximum temperatures hover around 6-7 degrees Celsius in J&K and Ladakh. Many water bodies, including the Dal Lake, the Wullar Lake and others have frozen in parts, due to the extreme cold in the valley.

67.60% and 47.56% polling for panch and sarpanch seats in J&K
The SEC said that bypolls for 285 vacant seats of panches were held in the 8th and final phase on Saturday. Of the 53,817 electors, 36,378 voted to decide the fate of 596 candidates in the fray. The SEC said that polling was peaceful at all polling stations across the state.Jammu division recorded 84.07 per cent voting and Kashmir division 65.92 per cent voting for panch by-elections on Saturday.
Farmers allege Facebook blocked their page on govt's behest
Baljeet Singh, who termed himself the head of IT wing of the agitation, said: "The government is afraid of the farmers." In a jibe at Facebook, Twitter user Mandeep Muktsar wrote: "Breaking: #MarkZuckerberg to be nominated to Rajya Sabha. @Facebook." The Facebook page was later restored, reports said.
Govt invites farmers for fresh talks to end deadlock
The letter, written by Joint Secretary, Agriculture, Vivek Aggarwal to the farmers' representatives who had earlier participated in talks with the government, said: "Please provide a list of apprehensions and give appropriate dates so fresh talks can be initiated in Vigyan Bhavan so that the protest ends soon."
