IMD Forecasts Persistent Dense Fog and Cold Day Conditions in North India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast stating that dense to very dense fog and "Cold Day" to severe "Cold Day" conditions are expected to persist over the plains of Northwest India for the next 24 hours, gradually decreasing thereafter. In addition to the foggy conditions, the IMD predicts a fresh spell of rainfall over Northwest and Central India, with isolated thunderstorms and hailstorms over east Rajasthan and west Madhya Pradesh on January 8 and January 9.

According to the IMD, minimum temperatures range from 6-9 degrees Celsius over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, west Uttar Pradesh, and north Rajasthan, and 10-12 degrees Celsius over parts of east Uttar Pradesh, remaining parts of Rajasthan, and northwest Madhya Pradesh. Some regions are experiencing above-normal temperatures, ranging from 1 to 7 degrees Celsius above the usual levels.

Maximum temperatures vary between 14-15 degrees Celsius over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and 16-18 degrees Celsius over north Rajasthan and west Uttar Pradesh. However, in many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, temperatures are below normal by 4-9 degrees Celsius.

The IMD anticipates that dense to very dense fog conditions will persist in some parts of Punjab and isolated pockets of Haryana and Chandigarh until January 9. Additionally, dense fog is expected in isolated pockets of west Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on January 8, with subsequent dense fog in isolated pockets for the following two days.

The forecast also includes predictions of dense fog in isolated pockets over east Uttar Pradesh from January 8 to January 19, along with Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura until January 9. Furthermore, the IMD states that Cold Day to severe Cold Day conditions will likely continue in some parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi until January 8, with Cold Day conditions in isolated pockets over Rajasthan on January 8.
