Jaipur Police on Monday arrested social media influencer 'IIT Baba,' whose real name is Abhay Singh, under the NDPS Act for being in possession of marijuana. Singh, who had become a viral sensation during the Mahakumbh in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj, was arrested by the Shiprapath police from a hotel but was later released on a surety bond.
The police found a small amount of ganja from Singh, leading to action under the NDPS Act, officials said. "We got a tip-off from the control room regarding a young man, Abhay Singh, who was reportedly trying to commit suicide at Riddhi Siddhi Park Classic Hotel. When the officers reached the spot, they spotted IIT Baba, who confessed to being ganja-intoxicated," authorities said.
Still, Aditya Kakare, IPS Trainee, Mansarovar Police Station, informed IANS that reports of an attempted suicide were still to be authenticated. "It is not at this stage we can confirm suicide, but at least we confirm ganja from his possession. As the quantity was small, he was eventually released," stated Kakare.
Police officials disclosed that the tip-off was provided by a doctor who had reported IIT Baba's stay at the hotel. On subsequent search, authorities found two grams of ganja in his possession. In keeping with standard protocol, he was brought to the police station and subsequently released on bail.
At a surprise moment, when he was departing from the hotel, IIT Baba asked the police to happy birthday wishes. He also asserted that he did not know why the police had come to his room.
Rejecting the charges, IIT Baba countered, "If arrests are made on this ground, then many others too would have to face legal action."
This is the follow-up to recent news stories that included IIT Baba, who earlier reported that he was attacked after participating in a live debate on a private news channel in Noida.
