I Have Options If Congress Doesn't Need Me: Shashi Tharoor's Bold Message

This is in the backdrop of continuing controversy over his appreciation of the Left government in Kerala and his previous comments on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's interaction with US President Donald Trump, both of which have created divisions within the party.

Shashi Tharoor has given a strong message to Congress high command, stating that if the party does not appreciate his work, he is certainly capable of looking elsewhere.

This is in the backdrop of continuing controversy over his appreciation of the Left government in Kerala and his previous comments on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's interaction with US President Donald Trump, both of which have created divisions within the party.

Tharoor pointed out that he has numerous options to explore, such as his books, speeches, and talk invitations globally, if the party no longer needs his services. He explained that although he is still dedicated to the party if they need him, he will not be afraid to look for other projects if necessary.

The row began after Tharoor, a senior Kerala Congress leader, complimented the Kerala Left Front (LDF) government on its economic management of the state, particularly its advancement in the startup market.

Though the Left acclaimed his observation, they were widely criticized by his own party. Tharoor justified himself, saying that his comments were aimed at Kerala's growth and that politicians need not always talk in purely party lines.

Tharoor further highlighted that the Congress needs to increase its popularity in Kerala since the party's success in the state election was not consistent with the national revival in 2024. He stressed that the Congress cannot bank on its loyal voter base alone and needs to draw more people towards it if it seeks to come back to power. Tharoor's frankness and readiness to defy the party establishment have set off a wider debate on the party's direction and style of politics.
