Navneet Kumar Sehgal, a retired bureaucrat, steps into the role of Prasar Bharati chairman, marking an end to the four-year vacancy in this pivotal position. Following the conclusion of A Surya Prakash's tenure in February 2020, as he reached the age limit of 70, the position remained unoccupied until Sehgal's appointment.
According to an order from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, dated March 15, 2024, Sehgal's appointment comes with a term of three years or until he reaches the age of seventy, whichever comes first. This decision was made following the recommendation of the Selection Committee and the approval of the President.
The process of selecting the new chairman was led by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who presided over a crucial meeting. Dhankhar, also serving as the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, plays a pivotal role in the selection panel for the Prasar Bharati chairman. Alongside him, the panel comprises the chairperson of the Press Council of India and a nominee of the President, ensuring a comprehensive decision-making process.
The meeting convened by Vice President Dhankhar saw the presence of Justice Ranjana Desai (retd), the chairperson of the Press Council of India, and Sanjay Jaju, the Secretary of Information and Broadcasting, indicating a collaborative effort in the selection of the new Prasar Bharati chairman.
