Amid escalating concerns over the increasing cases of the highly contagious Omicron Covid variant, India has registered a massive surge in Covid-19 cases with a sharp rise of 181% in the week ending Sunday compared to the previous week, according to the data released by the Ministry of Health.
The Covid cases nearly tripled in a week. The country recorded around 1.3 lakh fresh cases during the week (December 27 - January 2), whereas, the tally for the week (December 20 - December 26) was at 46,073, the lowest tally recorded since May 2020. This week's tally of cases was also the highest since October 4 - 10.
The overall weekly cases witnessed a significant spike in nearly 30 out of 36 states/union territories and with the upward trend in new infections, the country is likely to witness a third wave situation.
Maharashtra has registered the highest number of cases in the week ending January 2 with 41,980 new infections. The cases in Maharashtra hiked nearly five times as the cases recorded in the previous week stood at 8,292.
National capital Delhi registered a 9-fold rise in new cases last week with 1,155 infections.

West Bengal recorded the second-highest number of cases in a week with the cases increasing five times compared to the previous week. The cases went up from a tally of 3,550 to 18,524.
Bihar also reported a massive spike as the cases increased by 12 times in a week as it rose from 85 cases to 1,073 cases. Jharkhand's tally also rose from 326 to 2,879.
India has reported 33,750 fresh Covid-19 cases and 123 deaths fatalities in the last 24 hours, as per Health Ministry's data.
The total number of active cases in India stands at 145582 and the total tally of death due to Covid has increased to 481893. Moreover, the recovery of 10846 patients in the past day has also pushed the total tally of recovered in the country to 34295407.
