Calcutta High Court takes suo motu cognisance of Sexual Assault of Women in Sandeshkhali

Moved by media coverage highlighting the troubling circumstances, Justice Sinha Roy personally intervened to address the serious allegations of sexual assault reportedly conducted "at gunpoint," as well as the unauthorized transfer of tribal lands in violation of legal statutes.

Expressing deep concern over the recent events unfolding in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal, the Calcutta High Court took proactive measures on Tuesday by initiating suo motu cognisance of reports detailing alleged instances of sexual assault and the illicit transfer of tribal land. Justice Apurba Sinha Roy conveyed his distress at the situation, emphasizing his disappointment with the ongoing developments.

Moved by media coverage highlighting the troubling circumstances, Justice Sinha Roy personally intervened to address the serious allegations of sexual assault reportedly conducted "at gunpoint," as well as the unauthorized transfer of tribal lands in violation of legal statutes. In response, he instructed the registrar general of the high court to issue notices to various state authorities, including the inspector general of police, the DIG of Barasat range, the superintendent of police, and the district magistrate of North 24 Parganas district.

Scheduled for a hearing on February 20, the court acknowledged additional reports indicating violent acts allegedly committed against innocent individuals in pursuit of property seizure. In a bid to ensure fair representation and assistance in the proceedings, Justice Sinha Roy appointed advocate Jayanta Narayan Chatterjee as the amicus curiae to provide expert guidance.

During the court session, Public Prosecutor Debasish Roy, representing the state, assured the court of the Advocate General's forthcoming involvement in presenting the state's position during the upcoming hearing. Meanwhile, Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district has become the focal point of widespread protests in response to the concerning developments.
