On Friday, Border Security Force (BSF) personnel killed seven terrorists in a bid to infiltrate the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district.
Sources in the BSF said that a large number of terrorists, armed and backed by Pakistan Rangers fire cover, had tried to enter Indian territory. The terrorists were given a tough fight by the BSF personnel, and seven intruders were killed.
"The operation is still in progress in the area," BSF officials confirmed.
The attempt to infiltrate followed after terrorists, who had attacked defense installations with drones and low-range missiles, were foiled by security-conscious Indian forces in different sectors such as Jammu, Samba, and R.S. Pura. The terrorists, supported by Pakistan troops, failed despite their attempts to infiltrate into the Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir.
A BSF spokesperson reported that the infiltration bid was thwarted late Thursday night at around 11 p.m. The terrorists were compelled to return into Pakistan territory.
Pakistan's heavy mortar shelling, on the other hand, continued to pound civilian targets in the Uri sector of Baramulla district late Thursday night, killing one woman and injuring another. The two ladies were in a car driving from Razerwani to Baramulla when they were hit by a shell fired from the other side of the Line of Control (LoC) at Mohura. Nargis Begum was killed, and Hafeeza Begum was injured.
The Pakistan Army's shelling also hit other regions, such as Tangdhar, Poonch, Rajouri, and Samba, where both the International Border and LoC were hit.
The air defense of the Indian military effectively crippled drones and short-range missiles targeting Jammu airport and other defense establishments in Jammu city.
As a reaction to the mounting situation, both Jammu and Srinagar cities witnessed a total blackout, with warning sirens sounding the alert of an impending threat. Electricity, however, has been reinstated in both the cities.
In view of the prevailing security threats, all institutions of education including schools, colleges, and universities in Jammu and Kashmir would be closed on Friday and Saturday. The region's Education Minister, Sakina Itoo, made the decision to keep institutions closed to guarantee the safety of students. Besides, the Registrar of Kashmir University, Naseer Iqbal, had also confirmed that classes at the university would be cancelled on Friday.
