Bharatiya Space Station Tests Scheduled for Next Year, Confirms Somanath

Speaking at the India International Science Festival, Somanath revealed that talks with the industry are ongoing to achieve the ambitious timeline set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who aims to launch the Bharatiya Space Station by 2035.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to conduct the first tests for the proposed Bharatiya Space Station next year, with plans to manufacture, test, and launch its first module by 2028, according to ISRO Chief S Somanath. Speaking at the India International Science Festival, Somanath revealed that talks with the industry are ongoing to achieve the ambitious timeline set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who aims to launch the Bharatiya Space Station by 2035.

Somanath expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating that the recent review of the space station architecture presented several options, making the decision process challenging. He clarified that the space station, initially unmanned, would function irrespective of the presence of astronauts.

In addition to the space station project, Somanath shared plans for India's first mission to Venus, scheduled for a 2028 launch. The mission aims to bring down costs, particularly on high-value components. While Somanath acknowledged the challenges in specifying a timeline for the Venus mission, he emphasized that ISRO's primary focus remains on fulfilling tasks set by the prime minister.

Furthermore, ISRO is actively developing the Next Generation Launch Vehicle (NGLV) to accommodate heavier payloads. The NGLV is a strategic move to support upcoming missions, including those involving human spaceflight to the moon and the establishment of a space station. The ambitious plans signify India's commitment to advancing its space exploration capabilities and contributing to the global space community.
