A young man was reportedly denied entry to the Bengaluru Metro train by officials from the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) on Tuesday due to his unbuttoned shirt.
At the Doddakallasandra Metro Station, BMRCL staff purportedly instructed the young man to button up his shirt and present himself with neat attire before being permitted to enter the station premises.
However, fellow commuters intervened, with one individual recording the incident and sharing it on social media platforms.
"Another instance of attire-related discrimination just unfolded before my eyes. A laborer was halted and instructed to fasten his top two buttons. When did our beloved Namma Metro adopt such policies?" the concerned commuter lamented on X, while tagging BMRCL and Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya.
In response, BMRCL emphasized its commitment to treating all passengers equally, irrespective of their socio-economic status or gender.
"We uphold the principle of non-discrimination among passengers, regardless of their financial status or gender. The staff's actions were prompted by suspicion of the passenger being intoxicated, and measures were taken to ensure the safety and comfort of women and children on board. Following counseling, the passenger was permitted to continue his journey," clarified an official statement.
This incident follows a previous controversy where a security staff member was terminated by the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation due to public outcry over an incident where a farmer was denied boarding the train.
The farmer, dressed in worn-out attire and carrying a bag on his head, faced refusal from BMRCL staff.
