When Salman Khan Imagined Superstars in Leading Roles Instead of Himself

At the time that his maiden venture, Maine Pyaar Kiya, was being made, Salman wasn't confident that he could carry the film on his own shoulders. He always envisioned Jackie Shroff or Anil Kapoor essaying roles that he was offered.

Salman Khan happens to be one of the most famous and bankable stars of Bollywood today, but there was a time when his confidence was not so strong.

At the time that his maiden venture, Maine Pyaar Kiya, was being made, Salman wasn't confident that he could carry the film on his own shoulders. He always envisioned Jackie Shroff or Anil Kapoor essaying roles that he was offered.

In the 1980s, Jackie and Anil were huge stars, having combined in some big hits like Ram Lakhan, Karma, and Parinda. So it would be but obvious for Salman to think of them as stars of major films.

In an interview, brimming over with nostalgia, Salman shared with them a touching memory from the shoot of the iconic song "Kabootar Ja Ja". He recalls, "At the age of about 18 years during the shooting of the song 'Kabootar Ja Ja Ja', I realised that this was my part."

Maine Pyaar Kiya, which made Salman a star will be re-released on August 23, and the feeling is nostalgic.

First, Vindu Dara Singh, Deepak Tijori, and Faraaz Khan were auditioned for Prem. While Faraaz Khan, the son of Yusuf Khan from Amar Akbar Anthony, came close to being signed, he was replaced because of health issues. Salman, of course, landed the role which launched his commercial success.

Salman reflected, "In many narrations, I'd imagine Jackie Shroff or Anil Kapoor in those roles, but I couldn't see myself in such major films. That moment was when I truly felt, 'Yes, I can do this'. I had tears in my eyes."

Released on December 29, 1989, the film not only established Salman as a leading actor but also rescued Rajshri Productions from financial peril.
