Per Variety, this is a huge milestone for the film, which has experienced numerous delays since it was originally announced in April 2022, merely a month following the initial The Batman—starring Robert Pattinson—splash at the box office, which took in over $772 million globally. The sequel is now officially set to open on October 1, 2027, over five years following the original's release.

The announcement comes just ahead of the debut of James Gunn and Peter Safran's reimagined DC Universe, starting with the new Superman movie. While speaking to Entertainment Weekly recently, Gunn replied to fan angst over waiting for Reeves' script.

"Listen, we're supposed to receive a script in June. I hope that occurs. We feel very positive about it," Gunn said. He went on to support Reeves' creative schedule, saying, "People need to leave Matt's nuts alone because it's like, let the man write the screenplay in the time that he takes to write it. That's just the way it is. He doesn't owe you something because you enjoy his film. I mean, you enjoy his film because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does."

Gunn went on, emphasizing how important it was to leave the creative team alone: "I am annoyed at people. I mean, it's just that thing people don't need to be entitled about. It's going to be ready when he feels good about the screenplay. And Matt's not going to give me the screenplay until he feels good about the screenplay."
