The new Disney-funded venture will be directed by Shawn Levy, the director now generating buzz for his efforts on Deadpool & Wolverine.

Ryan Gosling is joining the Star Wars universe, starring in a forthcoming standalone film called Star Wars: Starfighter, set for global release on May 7, 2027.

The new Disney-funded venture will be directed by Shawn Levy, the director now generating buzz for his efforts on Deadpool & Wolverine.

At the Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, Gosling described the project, lauding both the script and Levy's filmmaking. "The truth is that this script is just so great. It's got such an amazing story with amazing and original characters," shared the actor in Barbie. "It's got so much heart and so much adventure, and there just really isn't a more suited filmmaker for this specific story than Shawn."

Gosling's early fondness for Star Wars was in evidence during the event, as a picture of his early childhood Star Wars-patterned bed sheets was shown on screen. "You can tell from the photo, I think I was maybe dreaming about Star Wars before I even saw the movie," he said. "And it's probably defined my concept of what a movie even is."

The movie will be set around five years after the action in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker but won't be tied to the Skywalker saga or current sequels starring Daisy Ridley. The plot has yet to be revealed, although the official Star Wars website confirmed Gosling would be playing an entirely new character in an uncharted period in the galaxy's history.

“It’s not a prequel, not a sequel, it’s a new adventure. It’s set in a period of time that we haven’t seen explored yet,” director Levy explained.

Before Starfighter hits the big screen, fans can look forward to The Mandalorian and Grogu, a continuation of The Mandalorian series featuring Pedro Pascal, with Jon Favreau directing.

Gosling, who received an Oscar nod for playing Ken in Greta Gerwig's 2023 smash Barbie, keeps adding to his hodgepodge career. The Canadian thesp, renowned for turns in La La Land, The Notebook, and more recently as a stuntman on The Fall Guy, now travels to a far-off galaxy.
