Facing financial challenges, SpiceJet has announced that it will furlough 150 cabin crew members for a period of three months.
The budget airline is currently operating with a reduced fleet due to financial difficulties, legal issues, and problems with lessors. The airline now has around 22 aircraft in operation.
According to an airline spokesperson, the decision to place 150 cabin crew members on unpaid leave for three months was made in response to the current slow travel season and the smaller fleet size. The goal is to ensure the long-term stability of the organization.
The spokesperson clarified that during this furlough period, the cabin crew members will remain employees of SpiceJet, retaining their health benefits and accrued leave.
The airline is seeking to raise funds to improve its financial situation. "As we work toward expanding our fleet following the upcoming qualified institutional placement (QIP), we look forward to welcoming our crew members back to active duty," the spokesperson added.
Earlier in the day, the aviation regulator DGCA reported that SpiceJet has been placed under enhanced surveillance.
