Report Reveals 761 Cyber Threat Detections per Minute in India for 2023

Behavior-based detections accounted for 49 million instances, constituting 12.5 percent of the total detections.

In 2023, India encountered a staggering volume of cyber threats, surpassing 400 million incidents spread across approximately 8.5 million endpoints, averaging about 761 detections every minute, according to a report by the Data Security Council of India (DSCI) in collaboration with Seqrite, an enterprise cybersecurity solutions provider. Surat and Bengaluru reported the highest number of detections, with 15 percent and 14 percent respectively.

Behavior-based detections accounted for 49 million instances, constituting 12.5 percent of the total detections. The report highlighted that over 50 percent of detections were linked to removable media and network drives, while nearly 25 percent of attacks stemmed from clicking on malicious links in emails and websites.

The threat landscape on Android devices also emerged prominently, recording an average of three attacks per month per device throughout 2023.

CEO of the Data Security Council of India, Vinayak Godse, emphasized the increasing sophistication in cybercrime engineering, particularly in malware and ransomware. Ransomware attacks, designed to evade traditional detection methods, were identified as a major concern, showcasing their evolving and intricate techniques.

The report also revealed the presence of fake and malicious applications on the Google Play Store, such as SpyLoan apps, fake apps, and HidAdd apps, posing risks to millions of users.

Cryptojacking, with over 5.28 million detections in the year, emerged as a significant threat, highlighting the breadth of cyber challenges faced. Trojans (41 percent) and infectors (33 percent) were identified as major contributors to the spectrum of cyber attacks.

The automotive industry experienced the highest number of detections, followed by the government and education sectors, raising concerns about vulnerabilities across different sectors.

Vishal Salvi, CEO of Quick Heal Technologies, stressed the necessity for collaborative efforts and innovative solutions to combat the evolving cyber landscape, emphasizing the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures.
