Government Greenlights Reopening of 32 Airports Amid De-escalation Along India-Pakistan Border

The airports were shut down in enforcement of the increase in cross-border drone and missile attacks after terrorists allegedly sponsored by Islamabad killed 26 tourists in Pahalgam.

The government in the center on Monday released a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) declaring the reopening of 32 airports that were closed since May 9 in phases.

Airports to restart operations include major terminals like Srinagar, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Jammu, Leh, and Jodhpur, and others like Bhuntar, Ludhiana, Shimla, Kangra-Gaggal, and Bathinda. Those in Gujarat and Rajasthan like Jamnagar, Bhuj, Mundra, Kandla, and Jaisalmer are also among those that are to open in phases.

While the ceasefire Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations called seems to be holding momentarily, officials remain on guard. "The night was peaceful on the whole Jammu and Kashmir and other sector along the International Border. There have been no incidents, a first peaceful night in recent times," the Indian Army confirmed in a statement that was issued on Monday.

The resumption of flights at these strategically positioned airports, several of which are situated close to the border, marks a tentative softening of recent hostilities. The fighting had increased dramatically in the wake of the Pahalgam tragedy, and India had responded by initiating 'Operation Sindoor' in retaliation.

Resumption of operations at these airports will help in easing the general dislocation in air travel and to restore normalcy in flight operations.

At the same time, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) said operations at the capital city airport are still "currently smooth." However, the administration warned of growing airspace dynamics and improved security measures that could result in delays in both scheduling and passenger screening.

Passengers are asked to remain informed through airline announcements, make sure to take more time at security checkpoints, and adhere carefully to baggage and check-in requirements. Live flight schedules can be found on airline websites or through the official Delhi Airport website.

Even with the ceasefire deal on Saturday, national security is the top concern. Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a high-level meeting on Sunday with the Army Chief, Navy Chief, Air Force Chief, and the Chief of Defence Staff to gauge the present security situation.
