Pakistani Army is reportedly upset with former PM Imran Khan for blaming General Yahya Khan, and not Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, for separation of East Bengal in 1971.
The authorities are preparing to launch an investigation against Imran and several top officials of his party over a controversial tweet and an accompanying video that was posted from his X account regarding the separation of East Pakistan in 1971, news agency PTI reported.
His account, operated by his social media team from prison, posted a video on May 26 containing a quote attributed to him, urging Pakistanis to read the Hamoodur Rahman Commission Report in order to decide who is the real traitor between General Yahya Khan and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The controversial tweet read: “Every Pakistani should study the Hamood ur Rahman Commission Report and get to know who was the true traitor, General Yahya Khan or Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.” - Founding Chairman PTI Imran Khan
The Hamoodur Rahman Commission had been formed to investigate the events leading up to the fall of East Pakistan, but its report had never been officially released.
This video claimed that the former military dictator Yahya Khan was responsible for the break-up of the country, pointing to alleged atrocities by the Pakistani military during the civil war. It also carried photos of current civilian and military leaders, saying they had hijacked the mandate of the party.
This immediately led to a heated debate, particularly among government officials, who said that Khan's party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, was trying to create hatred against the army by drawing a parallel between Khan and Sheikh Mujib.
The Federal Investigation Agency has already issued a notice to Khan in the matter. Moreover, an FIA team went to Adiala Jail on Thursday to question Khan, but he refused to see them, saying he would only respond in the presence of his counsel.
The main allegation against the video is that it aimed to incite the public to agitate against the state and its institutions and thus create fear and panic in the minds of the people.
