U.S. President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have expressed their shared commitment to achieving a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, "in accordance with international law and on the basis of the UN charter," according to a statement released by the White House on Monday following their earlier phone conversation.
This emphasis on "international law and UN charter" highlights the critical need to uphold Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty, which have been compromised by the ongoing Russian invasion that began in February 2022 and has seen various developments for both parties.
Earlier on the same day, Prime Minister Modi took to X to share, "Spoke to @POTUS @JoeBiden on phone today. We had a detailed exchange of views on various regional and global issues, including the situation in Ukraine. I reiterated India's full support for early return of peace and stability."
In his message, he referred to Biden as POTUS, an acronym for President of the United States.
Further discussing the call, the Prime Minister noted, "We also discussed the situation in Bangladesh and stressed on the need for early restoration of normalcy, and ensuring the safety and security of minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh."
In its statement, the White House reaffirmed, "The Leaders affirmed their continued support for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in accordance with international law, on the basis of the UN Charter."
President Biden also praised Prime Minister Modi for his significant visits to Poland and Ukraine, marking the first by an Indian Prime Minister in many years, along with his advocacy for peace and ongoing humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, particularly in its energy sector.
The White House further noted, "The Leaders also emphasised their continued commitment to work together, including through regional groups like the Quad, to contribute to peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific."
While the White House mentioned that the leaders talked about the upcoming annual UN General Assembly meetings, it did not clarify whether they would meet in person during the event. Prime Minister Modi is expected to participate in the meeting and address the UN General Assembly.
