US President Donald Trump on Friday again maintained his claim that he was instrumental in mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, even going so far as to say that the US prevented the possibility of a nuclear disaster between the two countries.
Addressing the press after Elon Musk, Trump said, "We stopped India and Pakistan from waging war. I think that might have ended up being a nuclear disaster."
Grabbing credit for brokering the truce, Trump also thanked leaders from the two nations, referring to them as "great leaders" who "understood, and they agreed, and that all stopped." He highlighted the effects of war on trade, saying, "We talked trade and we said 'we can't trade with people who are shooting at each other and potentially using nuclear weapons.'"
Trump further stated that the US is also striving to stop other wars around the world, claiming, "We are preventing others from fighting also, because in the end, we can fight better than anybody. We have the world's greatest military. We have the world's greatest leaders."
But India has always denied any suggestions of third-party interference in the ceasefire, making it clear that the recent ceasefire was the result of direct bilateral negotiations between the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) from the two nations and not related to trade negotiations.
Trump has repeatedly said he is responsible for de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, claiming that he informed both nuclear powers that the US would pursue meaningful trade with them if they ended the war.
Over two weeks since the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 civilians were killed, India conducted precision strikes codenamed Operation Sindoor against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. After four days of furious cross-border drone and missile attacks, the two countries agreed on May 10 to cease hostilities.
