President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Israel has agreed to a 60-day Gaza ceasefire, subject to specific "necessary conditions," and warned the militant group Hamas to accept them before the crisis reaches boiling point.
The announcement pre-empts Trump's meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday.
Two officials from the Trump administration confirmed that Hamas remains to be convinced about the proposed agreement.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump announced that Qatar and Egypt would be mediaries in presenting the proposal.
"My Representatives had a long and very productive meeting with the Israelis today on Gaza," Trump wrote in the post.
He went on, "Israel has acceded to the terms required to complete the 60 Day CEASEFIRE, during which we will work with all parties to bring an end to the War. The Qataris and Egyptians, who have worked extremely hard to assist in the bringing of peace, will present this final offer."
Trump called on Hamas to accept the ceasefire, threatening that if it refused, things could go worse. "I hope, for the good of the Middle East, that Hamas takes this Deal, because it will not get better — IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" he stressed.
Earlier on Tuesday, a CNN report revealed that Qatari officials had made a new offer to both Israel and Hamas for a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza, with the support of the Trump administration, aimed at putting a stop to continuous fighting.
The latest Israel-Hamas ceasefire started on January 19, shortly before Trump formally took up office again in Washington. It continued until March, when the Israeli military resumed its Gaza campaign on the grounds of Hamas's habitual breach of ceasefire agreements. Humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians has since then dwindled considerably.
Today in Washington, Israel's Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer is meeting with senior officials of the Trump administration to discuss the ceasefire agreement, and more general matters such as Iran. Dermer will meet with Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff.
