Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tokyo on Friday, starting his two-day official visit to Japan for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit. Explaining the visit, he termed it as "an opportunity to deepen existing partnerships and explore new avenues of collaboration.
Sharing an update on social media platform X, PM Modi posted, “Landed in Tokyo. As India and Japan continue to strengthen their developmental cooperation, I look forward to engaging with PM Ishiba and others during this visit, thus providing an opportunity to deepen existing partnerships and explore new avenues of collaboration.”
Upon arrival, the Indian leader was greeted by ONO Keiichi, Japan's Ambassador to India, Sibi George, India's Ambassador to Japan, as well as a number of senior officials. Indian community members in Tokyo also gave a warm reception, welcoming him with traditional shows and warm greetings that marked the strong cultural tie between the two countries.
On his August 29–30 agenda, PM Modi will have his first official bilateral talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. Both the leaders will take stock of progress achieved under India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, while focusing on defence, security, trade, digital technology, climate initiatives, and innovation cooperation.
This marks PM Modi’s eighth trip to Japan since assuming office, underscoring the strategic importance New Delhi attaches to its ties with Tokyo. Beyond the summit, he is also scheduled to meet Japanese industrial leaders and political figures to boost economic engagement and encourage investments in new and emerging industries.
The agenda of the summit will also include regional and global updates, especially in the Indo-Pacific, as well as discussions on sustainable development and peace-building globally.
PM Modi had last visited Japan in May 2023. His recent meetings with PM Ishiba were at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, in June 2025, as well as at the ASEAN-India Summit in Vientiane in 2024.
After completing his Japan activities, PM Modi will go to China to attend the 25th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
