Amid the humongous evacuation operations undertaken by the Indian government to bring back Indian nationals from war-hit Ukraine, a Pakistani student who was stranded in the country has been rescued by the Indian authorities.

The Pakistani national, Asma Shafique, is now on her way to western Ukraine from where she will be evacuated once she reaches the border, as per an ANI report.

 “I want to thank the Indian embassy of Kyiv for supporting us all the way here as we were stuck in a very difficult situation and I also want to thank the Prime Minister of India for supporting us. Hope we get home safely because of the Indian embassy,” Miss Shafique said.

India launched Operation Ganga last week to bring back Indian nationals from Ukraine. Along with Indians, the authorities have also rescued nationals from Bangladesh (9), Nepal (8) as well as Tunisia (1).  

Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday expressed gratitude to Indian PM Modi for rescuing 9 nationals of the country from Ukraine.

On Tuesday, India’s Ministry of External Affairs announced that Indian nationals who were stuck in Ukraine’s north-eastern city of Sumy have been evacuated. Sumy was under attack from Russian bombardment.

India on Monday had expressed concerns at the UN Security Council and said that both the Russian and Ukrainian sides have failed to negotiate a "safe corridor" for the evacuation of Indian nationals from Sumy in north-eastern Ukraine.

The Indian Embassy in Ukraine on Tuesday announced that it has evacuated 52 out of 75 Indian sailors at the port of Mykolaiv in the war-hit nation.

The remaining 23 sailors were also evacuated and all the sailors, including Libyan and Syrian sailors, have crossed the Moldova border and are on their way to Bucharest.

18,000 Indians have been brought back on special flights till date. As of 7th March, 22,000 Indian nationals have left Ukraine.  

India last week decided to provide humanitarian assistance to Ukrainians fleeing the countries, including medicines, medical equipment, tents, protective eye gear, water storage tanks, solar maps and blankets. India will be sending more such humanitarian assistance.
This aid came after the request of Ukrainian ambassador to India Igor Polikha last week.
