Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has accused left-wing politicians of being "nervous" about Donald Trump's win, claiming that conservatives are unfairly labeled as a "threat to democracy" while leftist leaders receive accolades for the same international alliances.
In her speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) 2025 in Washington on Sunday, Meloni praised Trump and US Vice-President JD Vance, while targeting "elites" and left-wing leaders.
"The Left is anxious, and with the win by Trump, their annoyance has become mania — not just because conservatives are prevailing but because conservatives are working together all over the world," Meloni said.
She further highlighted what she perceived to be a double standard, alluding to the praise former US President Bill Clinton and former UK PM Tony Blair had received for developing a worldwide liberal network in the 1990s. At the same time, right-of-center politicians like Trump, Meloni, Argentina's President Javier Milei, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are repeatedly painted as democractic threats.
"When Bill Clinton and Tony Blair established the global leftist liberal network in the 90s, they were statesmen. Now, when Trump, Meloni, Milei, or perhaps Modi speaks, they are a threat to democracy. That is the double standard of the Left," she said.
Even with media and political resistance, Meloni underlined that conservative leaders keep on winning elections because people no longer believe in "lies."
"People are less gullible than the Left assumes. They vote for us because we stand up for freedom, love their countries, desire safe borders, protect businesses and people from green left madness, stand up for family and life, combat wokeness, fight for our inalienable right to religion and free speech, and champion common sense," she stated.
Meloni also expressed her endorsement of Trump, refuting fears that his presidency will split the conservative movement.
"Our enemies wish for President Trump to drift away from us, but having known him as a firm and effective leader, I would bet those hoping for divisions will be disappointed," she said.
Her words were warmly received by the conservative audience, highlighting increased cooperation among right-wing leaders worldwide.
