Reacting to Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif's threat regarding the Indus Waters Treaty, Hyderabad MP and AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi explained to the press that Sharif "should not speak nonsense" and reminded him of India's BrahMos missile capabilities.
In reference to the supersonic long-range missile, Owaisi stated, "BrahMos hai humaare paas (We have BrahMos). He has explained that he was in a swimming suit when he heard he had been informed nine airbases were targeted. He (Sharif) should not speak such rubbish. He is a nation's Prime Minister. Such talk will have no effect on India.".
The government has put the Indus Water Treaty on hold. Rather than changing your ways, you are issuing threats. These threats will not work. Enough is enough," Owaisi said.
The Indus Waters Treaty was put on hold after the Pahalgam terror attack, which left 26 civilians dead. The 1960 water-sharing accord will continue to be on hold until Pakistan "irrevocably gives up its support of terrorism," External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said recently.
Addressing an event in Islamabad, Sharif cautioned, "Enemy (India) can't take even a single drop of water from Pakistan. You threatened to cut our water. If you ever try to do such a thing, Pakistan will give you such a lesson that you will never forget." He also asserted that Pakistan would not abandon its rights under international treaties.
These incendiary remarks follow a succession of ominous remarks by top Pakistani officials, including Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, who also made a nuclear warning last week: "We are a nuclear nation. If we feel that we are going down, we'll take half the world down with us," as reported.
New Delhi responded by labeling Pakistan's nuclear threats as "stock-in-trade," further stating that the international community could assess the imprudence of such statements and the implications for nuclear command and control in a state where the military is in close association with terrorist organizations.
The External Affairs Ministry reiterated India's position, saying, "India has made it clear already that India will not succumb to nuclear blackmail. We will continue to take all necessary steps to ensure our national security."
