High-profile U.S. Senator and Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) has condemned President Donald Trump for reducing America's influence in the world and nudging India closer to China and Russia with his tariff tactics.
On the Senate floor, Durbin had contended that Trump's trade policies not only hurt American families but were also changing global alliances. "President Trump's tariff policies have driven India away from us and towards our competitors. Rather than making our hand stronger, they are weakening our position in the world," he said.
Durbin also pointed to the economic effects of the tariffs, correlating them with growing inflation in America, as school supplies increased 12 percent and staples such as vegetables, coffee, and eggs became extremely costly. "His misguided tariff wars have caused fear, uncertainty, and increased prices for American consumers," he said.
He also cautioned that U.S. industry potentially could incur almost $500 billion in foregone investment by the year 2029, hitting long-established industrial heartlands.
Aside from economic implications, Durbin underscored that Trump's actions can erode America's position in the world. "Just last week, Vladimir Putin of Russia and President Xi of China — our greatest rivals — were photographed smiling alongside Prime Minister Modi of India at a trilateral meeting," Durbin said. "These tariffs translate into higher prices, reduced opportunity, and a weaker position overseas." He called for the policies to be reversed, calling them chaotic, inflationary, and a damaging presence in the world.
Durbin agreed that targeted tariffs as a response to unfair foreign competition could be justified, but insisted that Trump's actions did not fit that category. "Now, some targeted tariffs in areas where there is unfair foreign competition can be warranted, but that is not what is happening," he said. “What we have is chaos. Everyone knows this sloppy approach by this Administration is a bad deal for the American people, and yet another example of executive overreach by this President, which is why the courts have ruled these tariffs illegal. But instead of respecting the courts, Trump has doubled down. On a Truth Social post, he said, ‘Without Tariffs… our Country would be completely destroyed, and our military power would be instantly obliterated,’” he said.
