The United States is gearing up to implement fresh sanctions against Iran in response to Tehran's recent missile and drone assaults on Israel, according to National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.
Sullivan made the announcement on Tuesday, April 16, emphasizing that President Joe Biden is actively collaborating with allies, such as the G7, and bipartisan leaders in Congress to devise a comprehensive strategy to address Iran's unprecedented aerial strike on Israel.
"In the near future, the U.S. will roll out new sanctions aimed at Iran, targeting its missile and drone programs, along with additional sanctions against entities backing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Iran’s Defense Ministry," Sullivan stated.
He further noted, "Moreover, we are diligently working with the Department of Defense and U.S. Central Command to bolster and extend the successful integration of air and missile defense systems and early warning mechanisms across the Middle East, thereby diminishing the efficacy of Iran’s missile and UAV capabilities."
Iran's direct assault on Israel over the weekend marked a historic first for the Islamic Republic. Tehran asserted that the attack was in retaliation for the killing of senior Iranian officers in Syria earlier in the month.
