US intelligence agencies report that Iran hacked electronic data from the campaign of Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump, in what is said to be a case of attempted election interference and trying to disrupt the US 2020 presidential election process.
Reacting to the report, Trump said on Wednesday, September 18, "This is election interference" by a foreign country. Speaking at a rally in a New York suburb, he claimed that Iran carried out the hack to aid the Kamala Harris campaign.
They issued a joint statement Sunday along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. They acknowledged that since June, parts of "stolen, non-public material" from Trump's campaign were forwarded to people on Joe Biden's campaign staff before he suspended his campaign, as well as to news organizations.
Malicious cyber activity" was part of Iran's efforts to "stoke discord and undermine confidence in our electoral process.", officials said. As they noted, the Biden campaign chose not to respond to such solicitations, and a Harris spokesperson said some of the targeted people believed the emails were "spam or phishing attempts."
"We condemn in the strongest terms any effort by foreign actors to interfere in US elections, including this unwelcome and unacceptable malicious activity, said the spokesperson,
In August, The Washington Post reported that they had received such material and that the FBI was investigating it.
The Trump campaign said so at the time, blaming Iran for having hacked into it. According to reports, Iranian hackers accessed the email account of Trump adviser Roger Stone and used it to infiltrate other accounts. Trump also reminded that during the last election campaign by him, Democrats had accused Russia of interference and the laptop owned by Biden's son, Hunter, with incriminating information was a Moscow plant.
However, after millions of dollars in investigations, they failed to prove any Russian collusion, and his laptop was confirmed to be authentic as well, he said.
Iran has special anger toward Trump due to his move to withdraw the US from an international deal with Iran aimed at curbing its nuclear weapons activity if sanctions against the Islamic Republic are eased.
