US Homeland Security Chief Chad Wolf resigns

This resignation comes less than a week after he pledged to remain in office and the fact that his department is holding charge of security on Inauguration day further perplexes the situation. Wolf cited a legal challenge to his leadership as a reason for his resignation, but that had surfaced months ago.

President Donald Trump's acting head of the Department of Homeland Security abruptly resigned Monday, leaving his post vacant at a tense time, especially ahead of the Biden inauguration.

This resignation comes less than a week after he pledged to remain in office and the fact that his department is holding charge of security on Inauguration day further perplexes the situation. Wolf cited a legal challenge to his leadership as a reason for his resignation, but that had surfaced months ago.

"For months we have known Chad Wolf has been serving illegally in his position, so the timing of his resignation from the Department today is questionable," said Rep. Bennie Thompson, the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. "He has chosen to resign during a time of national crisis and when domestic terrorists may be planning additional attacks on our government.''

"These events and concerns increasingly serve to divert attention and resources away from the important work of the Department in this critical time of a transition of power,'' he said in a written message to DHS employees.
He is the third person to resign from Donald Trump's cabinet after the attack by the president's supporters on the US Capitol last week. Even though Chad did not cite other reasons, but Trump's involvement in inciting the mob violence outside the US Capitol on January 6, might have contributed to these resignations, a further extreme event is anticipated to take place on the inauguration day.
