U.S. Acknowledges Indian Elections as World's Largest Democratic Exercise

“We celebrate the election that happened in India; it was the largest exercise of electoral franchise in any country anytime in history,” remarked State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller during his daily news briefing.

Answering a query about the recent election results and representation of Muslims in the Indian parliament, Miller dodged the question and instead said that such a step rests for the Indian people to decide.

 "I am just not going to comment on the Indian elections other than what we have said before, which is the electoral matters are matters for the Indian people to decide,"  he said.

Further on the year's specific results of the election, Miller repeated, "For specific results of that election, it's just not something we comment on."
