In a major political move, President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he is pulling Rep. Elise Stefanik's nomination as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. The move comes after her confirmation process had languished for months over fears of the Republican Party's slim grip on the House.
Trump made the announcement in a Truth Social post, emphasizing the significance of holding all Republican seats in Congress.
"We need to be together to achieve our Mission, and Elise Stefanik has been an essential member of our team from day one. I have requested Elise, being one of my largest Allies, to stay in Congress," said the president.
He would not reveal who he would name to replace her in the last available slot in his Cabinet.
Republican Majority in Peril
The move underscores growing concern among House Republicans, especially Speaker Mike Johnson, over their narrow majority. With two crucial special elections on the horizon in Florida, even a minor realignment of seats would hand control of the House to Democrats, presenting a formidable obstacle to Trump's legislative agenda.
After Trump's statement, Johnson praised Stefanik for putting the needs of the party first, calling her "selfless" and "patriotic."
"It is widely known Republicans maintain a razor-thin House majority, and Elise's decision to stand down from her nomination will enable us to retain one of the strongest, most unflinching members of our Conference to assist in advancing President Trump's America First agenda," Johnson posted on X (formerly Twitter).
He also made it known that Stefanik would be welcome back into leadership in the House, even though there are no vacancies at the moment.
Key Factors Led Stefanik to Make Decision
Appearing on Thursday evening, Stefanik said various factors contributed to her decision. She mentioned that the delay of an election to fill her vacancy, the coming special elections in Florida, and the precarious situation of the Republican majority were the main reasons.
By remaining in Congress, Stefanik will help fortify the position of the GOP at a pivotal time, guaranteeing the party's capacity to advance Trump's policy agenda.
