Trump Seeks to Halt ‘Politically-Motivated’ Prosecution of New York Mayor

Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove ordered the federal prosecutors in the city on Monday to drop the case of alleged corruption against Adams pointing out that the charges were filed after he criticised President Joe Biden's immigration policy.

US President Donald Trump has moved to drop a case against New York's mayor Eric Adams in a move to clear up some of the politically controversial prosecutions.

Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove ordered the federal prosecutors in the city on Monday to drop the case of alleged corruption against Adams pointing out that the charges were filed after he criticised President Joe Biden's immigration policy.

Bove cited a Trump order on "Ending the Weaponisation of the Federal Government" as motivating his instruction of the prosecutor to bring the charge against the mayor.

Damian Williams, appointed by Biden for the federal prosecuting position, quit with the start of the administration and an acting prosecutor is conducting the office's business.

Williams was also the prosecutor behind a case filed against a former officer of the Indian intelligence agency's Research and Analysis Wing, Vikas Yadav, and another Indian, Nikhil Gupta, who were charged with plotting to have Khalistani leader Gurpatwant Pannun killed.
Adams, like Biden is a Democrat but went against his president with this criticism.

Though Adams has not defected to any other party, he hasn't criticized Trump and has met him and received an invitation to his inauguration,

The most serious charges of corruption against Adams were that he had leaned on the fire department to grant a certificate to a Turkish Consulate building for favors.

At the time of the alleged incident, Adams was still not the mayor and was an official in one of the boroughs unconnected to the site of the building.

The prosecutors said that a favor received was being upgraded on a Turkish Airlines flight.

During his election campaign, Trump had said that the Biden administration and Democratic Party prosecutors were weaponing the legal system against him and others.

He sympathized with Adams, as he saw him as a fellow victim.

The Biden administration eased border security and millions of illegal migrants entered the US and over 210,000 entered New York straining the city's resources.

According to local law, the city government had to accommodate them, and it took over hotels to house them; Adams estimated it would cost the city as much as $6 billion.

Just before Adams was going to Washington with a delegation of other mayors affected by the migrant influx, federal officials raided his aide's house forcing him to drop out and return home. That was followed by the prosecution of Adams himself.
